2008 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week May 4-10, 2008
The American Association of Occupational Health Nurses and a number of other Alliance Program participants are supporting 2008 NAOSH Week, "Safety is Good Business." Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace.
Americans for Nursing Shortage Relief Alliance
This advocacy coalition, comprised of several nursing organizations, influences policy and funding decisions related to the current nursing shortage situation.
American Red Cross Alliance
The American Red Cross and AAOHN recognize the benefits of a collaborative relationship between the two organizations to share expertise and recruit nurses for development of Red Cross disaster relief operations by signing a three-year (October 2007-October 2010) Memorandum of Understanding.
Agreed upon common goals and objectives are:
- AAOHN would provide occupational and environmental health nursing expertise related to programs, policies, protocols, etc. of the American Red Cross Staff Health and Health Services Activities.
- AAOHN would recruit occupational and environmental health nurses for the American Red Cross through the association chapters nationwide.
- American Red Cross Staff and Health Services would provide disaster nursing expertise for AAOHN's emergency preparedness/disaster planning programs and activities.
- American Red Cross would promote training and retention of nurses at the local level and through Disaster Services Human Resources system. AAOHN members must successfully complete the training and all Red Cross volunteer requirements. American Red Cross would promote manuscript submission to the AAOHN Journal with the intent of enhancing the relationship through co-authored articles.
- American Red Cross and AAOHN would encourage speakers at the local and national level of both organizations.
- All AAOHN nurses would provide disaster health services pursuant to the Memorandum of Understanding in accordance with the Red Cross Disaster Health services Protocols.

Consumer Coalition for Health Privacy
The Consumer Coalition for Health Privacy is to educate and empower healthcare consumers to have a prominent and informed voice on health privacy issues at the federal, state, and local levels. Members of the coalition are committed to the development and enactment of public policies and private standards that guarantee the confidentiality of personal health information and promote both access to high quality care and the continued viability of medical research.

The Luminary Project
The Luminary Project: Nurses Lighting the Way to Environmental Health is a Web-based effort to capture the illuminating stories of nurses' activities to improve human health by improving the health of the environment. NIOSH Alliance
Under this partnership, AAOHN and NIOSH through collaborative efforts and expertise identify workplace safety and health research needs, translate research into practice and promote the health and protection of workers. AAOHN and NIOSH have a mutual commitment to creating a culture of safety and health, and maintaining safe and healthful work environments. Both organizations are committed to working together to network with interested parties to address the second decade National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA), Healthy People Initiative and other integral projects.
AAOHN and NIOSH will work cooperatively through the Partnership to provide outreach, communication, and professional development opportunities regarding occupational safety and health, and facilitate the transfer and implementation of effective workplace illness and injury prevention measures.

OSHA Alliance
On June 4, 2007, the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses, Inc. (AAOHN) renewed its Alliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
The Alliance provides AAOHN members and others, including large and small businesses, with information and guidance about workplace hazard preparedness and security issues, such as workplace violence, musculoskeletal disorders, bloodborne pathogens and personal protective equipment.
This Alliance was originally signed in 2003 and subsequently renewed in 2005.
Specific goals of the Alliance are:
- disseminate health and safety information and guidance through meetings, conferences and other events;
- raise awareness of and demonstrate a commitment to improving health and safety of the workforce;
- convene or participate in forums, round table discussions, or stakeholder meetings in the three topical areas of the Alliance; and
- encourage AAOHN’s members to act as industry liaisons and resources for OSHA’s cooperative programs and Compliance Assistance Specialists.

U.S. Bone and Joint Decade
The Bone and Joint Decade is a global, multi-disciplinary initiative targeting the care of people with musculoskeletal conditions--bone and joint disorders. Its focus is on improving your quality of life as well as advancing the understanding and treatment of those conditions through research, prevention and education. Bones, and the joints that create function and movement, are connected by muscle and ligaments. Their state of health and how they enable you to lead an active and healthy life is what the Decade aims to improve.
