AAOHN's 6th Annual Occupational Health Nursing Week Celebrates OHNs as "The Best Value in Healthcare"

Dates Coincide With AAOHN 2009 Symposium & Expo

This year National OHN Week celebrates the expertise, leadership and commitment that occupational and environmental health nurses exhibit everyday, and the tremendous value and service they provide to their clients, employers and communities. AAOHN is proud to represent you!

The Best Value in Healthcare
The economy is faltering, companies’ profits are falling and healthcare costs continue to rise. The pressure on businesses to maintain health benefits and contain healthcare costs is more intense than ever. Some businesses have chosen to hire other specialty healthcare providers to assume the role of occupational and environmental health nurses (OHNs). It is not unusual to find increasing numbers of onsite occupational health clinics without OHNs. Do these efforts to economize really display business savvy? Do they best serve both the employer and employees?

It would require the hiring of several other occupational health “specialists” to equal the expertise of one OHN. One OHN can fulfill the role of health promotion and disease prevention expert, case manager, and emergency preparedness and disaster planner. OHNs are skilled in regulatory compliance and safety education and training. In addition to their unparalleled health expertise (did we mention “nurse”?), OHNs are also business partners—team members who can function as “health interventionists”—providing innovative, business compatible solutions that ensure workforce health and safety and a healthy bottom line. All of which, contributes to their company’s competitive position in both the domestic and global economies.

Hiring an OHN is like hiring a team of specialty healthcare employees in one. They are, without a doubt, the best value in healthcare!

About OHN Week

OHN was established to raise awareness of the important role OHNs play in furthering the health and safety of the millions of people in our nation’s communities and workforce and to assist employees, employers and the general public in gaining a better understanding of how OHNs contribute to workers’ well-being.

The April dates commemorate the inception of the first professional association for occupational and environmental health nurses on April 19, 1942, when 300 nurses from 16 states founded the American Association of Industrial Nurses (AAIN), the predecessor to AAOHN.
