Certificate Programs

 

AAOHN offers Continuing Education Certificate Programs for occupational and environmental health nurses (OHNs) and other health care professionals, who want to: 

  • strenghten their knowledge base, 
  • enhance their professional competencies and/or
  • prepare them for new and challenging professional opportunities.

AAOHN's certificate programs are specifically designed to address the variety of emerging workforce, workplace and community needs, incorporating adult learning principles to advance knowledge and skills, enhance professional competence and broaden expertise.

To be awarded a certificate and continuing nursing education (CNE) contact hours, participants must successfully complete the course of study.

Safety Management Certificate Program: Level II – Examination Review
(Max. class size 25 ppl.)

Date: September 8-10, 2008
Time: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
CNE: 18.0 continuing nursing education contact hours
Fee: $550 AAOHN members
       $750 non-members
Place: Hyatt Regency Atlanta, GA

This is an in-depth 3-day program for professionals planning to take the ABOHN Safety Management Certification Examination or the Associated Safety Professional (ASP) Exam. Course content and materials are parallel to the examination blueprint. Physics, industrial hygiene, engineering and environmental concepts and problems will be a primary focus. A comprehensive study manual with worksheets is included and more than 100 sample questions will be reviewed. The Safety Manager credential is a terminal certification or the first step to the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation. Invest in your career and your future – become certified in safety management.

Faculty:
Sarah R. Budde, MAE, RN, COHN-S, CSP
Ms. Budde has over 30 years experience in occupational health and safety serving as Safety Leader for SCA and Weyerhaeuser. Currently, she is principal of Sarah Budde & Associates, a safety and health consulting firm with a focus on helping companies to select and implement safety initiatives and in providing training in occupational health and safety at all levels.

Note: A scientific calculator is required. The following are the only makes and models of calculators permitted*:

  • Casio: FX-115, FX-250, FX-260, FX-300
  • Hewlett-Packard: hp 9, hp 10, hp 12, hp 30
  • Texas Instruments: TI-30, TI-34, TI-35, TI-36

*Any version of these makes and models may be used. For example, a Hewlett Packard hp 30s is permitted, as is a Texas Instruments TI-30Xa.

Class may be cancelled if registration does not meet a minimum number of participants. Notification of any class cancellation will be made five weeks prior to the start of the class.

Physical Assessment Certificate Program: Putting It All Together
(Max. class size 40 ppl.)

Date: September 8 – 10, 2008
Time: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm
CNE: 18.0 continuing nursing education contact hours
Fee: $550 AAOHN members
       $750 non-members
Place: Hyatt Regency Atlanta, GA

This 3-day program will provide a comprehensive update for nurses who have some experience in physical examination. The basic conceptual framework of physical examinations will be covered with core applications and specific relevance to occupational health nursing. The first day will focus on examinations of the head/ENT and upper extremity. Day 2 will consist of specific assessment of the neck, heart, lung, abdomen and the lower extremities. Neurology, dermatology, ankle and back assessments will be covered on the last day of the program.

Susan S. Harada, RN, MN, C-FNP, OHNP, COHN-S
Susan received her BSN in nursing at the University of Hawaii in 1975 and completed a master’s degree in nursing at the University if California – Los Angeles in 1994. She is currently the senior occupational health manager at Amgen in Thousand Oaks, CA.

Joan E. Rigdon, RN, MN, OHNP, FNP-C, COHN-S
Joan has taught physical assessment classes for the past thirteen years through the University of California – Los Angeles, University of California – Irvine, Azusa Pacific University and national conferences. As an advanced nurse practitioner, she has worked in the field of occupational health in a variety of clinic and hospital settings.

Note: Return demonstrations will be conducted each day and participants are requested to bring comfortable clothing.
