About the Program
Spirometry is essential to the evaluation of respiratory health of the worker population. This program is designed for healthcare practitioners who often oversee the technical quality of a spirometry program and conduct pulmonary function testing in a clinic or industrial setting.  The webcast content will focus on spirometry pitfalls, emphasizing how errors in technique and calibration can affect test results. You’ll also learn the basic steps in interpreting spirometry test results. 

What You Will Learn
Upon completion of this webcast, participants will be able to:

  • Identify errors in testing technique and spirometer errors that affect test results;
  • Describe spirometer calibration steps required for valid occupational testing; and
  • Explain basic steps for interpreting spirometry results.

About the Faculty
Mary Townsend, PhD
Dr. Mary Townsend is an epidemiologist and pulmonary function testing consultant and an adjunct assistant professor in the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh. She is lead author for two position statements from the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Spirometry in the Occupational Setting and Evaluating Pulmonary Function Change Over Time. For more than twenty years Dr. Townsend has designed spirometry quality assurance programs for industrial and research clients and taught health professionals to conduct spirometry tests. She is also an experienced teacher of spirometry and spirometry refresher courses approved by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.
