AAOHN RELEASES KEY FINDINGS FROM MEMBERSHIP SALARIES & BENEFITS STUDY

New Research Shows Increases in Compensation for Occupational and Environmental Health Nursing Professionals

ATLANTA, GA (January 27, 2006) – The American Association of Occupational Health Nurses, Inc. (AAOHN) has released new research findings revealing a steady annual increase in AAOHN member salaries and benefits over the past five years. These findings and new information about trends in compensation and benefits for occupational and environmental health nursing professionals can be found in AAOHN’s Compensation and Benefits Study: A Statistical Survey of Job Profiles, Salaries and Benefits.

"This study brings positive news to the occupational and environmental health nursing profession by showing the majority of professionals in our industry have been experiencing salary and benefits increases over the past five years," states Susan A. Randolph, president of AAOHN. "These increases are a clear demonstration of the value that employers are placing on their occupational and environmental health staff and the marketplace demand for professionals who can provide expertise on the business implications of health issues."

Approximately 3,000 randomly selected AAOHN members responded to a survey sent out in October of 2005. The study reveals specific trends and statistics on the topics of salary and benefits by considering factors such as certification levels, education, job title, years in the position, work schedule, classification (exempt or non-exempt), race, age, region of country, company size and industry, and much more. Conducted by Kerr & Downs Research for AAOHN, the survey had a 40.6 percent response rate, with a sampling error of +/-1.5 percent given a 95 percent confidence level.

KEY FINDINGS:

Salary/Compensation:

  • Average salary for AAOHN members is $63,472 and according to the study, the estimated average salary has grown 3.9 percent annually since 2001.

  • Members with any type of occupational and environmental health nursing certification earn significantly more than those without occupational and environmental health nursing certification.

  • Education levels and age were also positively correlated with salary.

Benefits:

  • More than seven out of ten members receive dental, major medical, life, prescription drugs, long-term disability and short-term disability insurance.

  • The typical member has 75% of their health insurance program premium paid by their employer.

  • Three in four members report receiving a 401(k) retirement plan.
