Advocacy - the action of supporting a cause or proposal. When it comes to advocating for the health and safety of the worker, worker populations and community groups, and the specialty practice of occupational and environmental health nursing, the occupational and environmental health nurse (OHN) can make a difference.

As the primary health care provider in the workplace, the OHN advocates for:

  • confidentiality of employee health information,
  • worker health and safety from environmental hazards,
  • business and community disaster preparedness,
  • employee health and productivity, and
  • many more issues.

As a licensed health care professional (LHCP), the OHN is faced with practice challenges, such as:

  • state board of nursing - scope of practice,
  • multistate practice/nurse licensure compact,
  • nursing shortage,
  • federal and state regulatory issues, and
  • many more issues concerns.

As the professional association representing OHNs, AAOHN is committed to providing resources, guidance and access to current legislative and regulatory information that will support OHNs in their advocacy efforts for the worker, workplace environment and the specialty practice of occupational and environmental health nursing.

AAOHN's monthly newsletter regularly features information on advocacy and current topics.  Click here to peruse the current issue of AAOHN News.  Once the month has passed, the issue is archived for AAOHN members only.
