A Message from the Board

As we venture into the new season and new conversations about best practices for worker health and wellbeing, we are behooved to explore the various avenues for us to stay connected, stay in-the-know, and get involved.

Stay Connected and in-the-know. AAOHN offers several opportunities for us to stay connected and in-the-know.

Did you know:

  • That the 2024 AAOHN conference is going to be virtual? What a wonderful way to expand our reach and connections! This virtual platform is an opportune time to network, meet with experts, and share your own expertise, all the while learning about the latest evidenced-based clinical approaches, guidelines, interventions, and research. The 2024 Virtual National Conference is scheduled for June 5-6, 2024
  • That AAOHN is hosting its annual virtual symposium live on October 4th, 2023? The recordings will be available until November 4th, 2023. You can earn 10 CNE for attending various sessions on advanced practice, case management, total worker health, and clinical occupational nursing.
  • That you have what it takes to become an author and publish your work in the AAOHN’s own Workplace, Health, and Safety (WHS) Journal? WHS publishes the work of our members and beyond. There are my formats under which you can publish your work. For example, you can write a short case study describing a particular issue/phenomenon you have seen with a worker in your clinical practice. You can write a short piece about a new work-related guideline or intervention that you just learned about or implemented in your workplace. You can share the results of your research study or your quality improvement project. You can write about a policy or legal exemplar about worker health and safety. You are the expert and you SHOULD share your knowledge, skills, expertise, and experiences. The journal’s editorial board members are available and willing to brainstorm and coach the writing process. Check out the journal’s website.

Get Involved

  • There are also many ways to get involved with AAOHN. You can volunteer and contribute to a variety of AAOHN committees. For example, the Education Committee responds directly to the members’ expressed needs and interests. It coordinates various learning opportunities including workshops, webinars, and other learning and networking opportunities such as conference planning. Check out all the committees and consider how you can get involved. Committees (aaohn.org)
  • In addition to the committees, you can be involved as an AAOHN board member and contribute to the growth and mission of the organization. It is so important to be in-tuned with the organization’s bylaws and election process.

It is indeed an exciting time for AAOHN and its members and affiliates. Get involved, stay connected in-the-know: The time is right, the time is now!

In service,

From the AAOHN Foundation

Cheers to the holiday season! One of my favorite memories of 2023 is of the Foundation’s event at the Alamo during the AAOHN annual conference. We had an amazing night filled with enjoying one another’s company, making new connections, enjoying Texas BBQ, and learning more about sleep medicine from our guest speaker, Dr. Seema Khosla. We are already planning for our next event in 2025 which is set to top our night at the Alamo! Pittsburgh PA has so much to offer and our collaboration with Pennsylvania AOHN Chapter you will not be disappointed in the 2025 AAOHN Foundation event. Stay tuned for more information on this!

Another wonderful memory was meeting some of our wonderful sponsors. The Foundation counts on the generosity of our benefactors to support the grants and scholarships used to further the research, education, and aspirations of occupational health professionals. I would like to take a moment to recognize one of our most steadfast supporters, Dr. Joe Fanucchi. Dr. Joe, as he is fondly called, began his support of the Foundation in 2016 with the creation of the Meditrax Scholarship. Year after year he has demonstrated his commitment and continued support of our beloved field of occupational health. It was under Dr. Joe that the Meditrax Leadership Institute Scholarship was also created. We are excited to announce his support of the newest scholarship offering by generously donating monies to help occupational health nurses to prepare to take their COHN or COHN-S certification examinations. We are very excited to announce this certification scholarship is open to National and Chapter member OHNs. The 2024 scholarship and grant offering will be posted on our website by the end of December.  To learn more about how you can apply please visit our page. Many thanks to Dr. Joe for his continued support of the Foundation and our mission!

We continue to focus on our fundraising efforts and growing out our social media presence. We remain steadfast to the Foundation’s purpose: acting as both a vital source of funds and a stimulus for substantive work to solve today's worker health and safety issues. We are in much appreciation with the support of our many benefactors.

To our Fellows, your support to the Fellowship Circle provides resources to fund the Liberty Leadership Scholarship, please take a moment and donate to the Foundation. Your donations are essential and a wonderful way to pay it forward to the occupational health professionals following the paths you have been blazing. While we call on our Fellows for donations, we are asking all members to donate to the Foundation. Since we have gone to alternating in-person and virtual conferences, our fundraising has been significantly impacted. Please consider donating to the Foundation today!

Lastly, there are still Foundation pins available for purchase. Another great way to support the Foundation.

Wishing you all a healthy and happy 2024! Cheers to another year of meeting challenges. Thank you once again for your tireless efforts.

Most Sincerely,

Shelaine Miller, RN, COHN

AAOHN Endorses the APRN Compact

AAOHN supports the APRN Compact in the legislative efforts to bring the benefits of the APRN Compact to APRNs across the country. The APRN Compact allows for APRNs with 2,080 hours* or more of practice to have one multistate license in their home state, with the privilege to practice in other APRN Compact party states without obtaining additional licenses.

To join the APRN Compact, states need to enact the APRN Compact model legislation and implement a federal criminal background check for APRN licensure. The APRN Compact will become operational once seven states enact legislation.
