Pre-Conference COHN/COHN-S Review Course

AAOHN hosts a two-day workshop covering the major components of occupational health nursing for review for the certification exam and led by an experienced occupational health nursing expert. Topics include occupational health nursing roles, direct care, management & leadership, health promotion, counseling, toxicology, industrial hygiene, environmental relationships, research, case management, and legal/ethical issues. In addition to instruction and discussions, activities, pre and post-tests, and additional resources are provided to assist participants in effectively preparing for the certification exam. Nurses interested in learning more about the field of occupational health nursing will also find this course beneficial. This course content follows the ABOHN exam blueprint.

Learner Outcomes:

  • Define current occupational health nursing roles and functions and describe occupational health nursing strategies for providing direct care and health promotion to workers.
  • Discuss the concepts and principles of ergonomics, industrial hygiene, case management, hearing conservation, toxicology, epidemiology, and occupational health nursing research.
  • Discuss legislation relevant to occupational health nursing, as well as federal standards and regulations.
  • Identify topic areas to be studied for ABOHN Certified Occupational Health Nurse exam.

Instructor:

Sarah (Sally) Amanda Foster-Chang, RN, MSN, ANP-BC, COHN-S, DNP

Sally has over 30 years of nursing experience in hospital, corporate and migrant health.  She has set up four occupational health programs and served as the Program Management Consultant in the VA National Environmental and Occupational Medicine Consult Group and the National Administrator of OHRS, an Occupational Health Electronic Medical Record. She is a certified Adult Nurse Practitioner, a certified occupational health nurse-specialist and a certified Medical Examiner for DOT physicals. Sally is a frequent AAOHN Education volunteer, and an associate editor with the Workplace Health and Safety Journal.
